(by Ann-Margret Hovsepian)
Recently, I was speaking with a friend about relationships. He shared with me about an experience that made him realize how great God's love is for us. I was so touched by his analogy that I'd like to share it with you.
Most of us probably know what it's like to love or have a "crush" on someone and learn that the feeling is not mutual. We do anything we can to show the person how much we care and hope that he or she will have a change of heart.
However, because of our love, we are also willing to respect this person's feelings and not force ourselves into his or her life if we're not wanted. And yet, we can't help but hurt at least a little bit because we wish that this person loved us back.
My friend pointed out that God really understands what we feel like at that point. His love for each one of us, although not one of us deserves it, is so great that He did not hesitate to suffer the most painful and humiliating circumstances and punishments to prove it.
Sadly, most of His loved ones have rejected His perfect love. Still, He waits, longing to enter into a relationship with His precious men and women.
But Jesus Christ is a gentleman, as our Pastor often describes Him. Jesus does not barge into anyone's life. He stands outside the door of our hearts . . . patiently knocking, quietly waiting to be invited in.
Imagine loving someone that much and being rejected. How it must hurt. And when the love is that true, the hurt doesn't come from having your ego bruised–it comes from knowing how much you have to offer and how much that person has to lose by not accepting your love.
I don't know about you, but I can't ignore Jesus' love for me. No one else can offer it.
He didn't show His love for me by sending me flowers or dedicating a love song to me (although He has written about His love for me in the Bible!)
No, Jesus proved His love by allowing Himself to be punished for my sins. He loved me so much that He was willing to give up His own life so I could live forever. Awesome.
I pray that you have discovered Christ's love for you and that you have surrendered to it. As we remember His death and resurrection this month, concentrate on what He has done for you. I'm sure that you won't be able to walk away from Him unaffected.
He loves you.
